Portraits of Who We Are

Thursday, February 1st - Friday, May 18th, 2017

There are relatively few exhibitions of self-portraits by African American artists; this exhibition has been developed to address the ways in which African American artists portray themselves, their communities, and their culture. Portraits provide the viewing audience with documentation of the existence of the subject and the cultural and social setting, while revealing multiple aspects of a deeper view of our collective human evolution and shared humanity. This exhibition also includes several self-portraits by living, practicing artists, who have been commissioned by the Center to create works that will be accessioned into the Driskell Center’s permanent art collection.

In conjunction with Portraits of Who We Are, the David C. Driskell Center will host a symposium on African American Artists and self-portraiture. More details are forthcoming.

The Driskell Center Gallery’s hours are Monday through Friday from 11AM to 4PM with extended hours on Wednesday until 6PM. The Driskell Center Gallery will additionally be open on the select Saturdays: February 17th, March 3rd, and April 28th. The gallery will be closed from March 19th through 23rd for Spring Break.  The Driskell Center observes all University of Maryland closings due to inclement weather and holidays. The David C. Driskell Center office is open daily during the weekdays from 9AM through 5PM.
