Undeclared War

Wives waiting up for their husbands was the theme of the calendar for which VanDerZee's 1929 photograph Undeclared War was planned. Here VanDerZee has constructed a photographic vignette of a woman waiting by the door for her tardy husband. She is armed for the battle with a rolling pin, milk bottles, and other domestic objects. VanDerZee injects humor into this light-hearted depiction of the "undeclared war" of the sexes.   A. L. C.
